What to do After an Auto Accident

Report the accident to local authorities and call for medical assistance if necessary.

Obtain names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses for any of the following:

Any injured people
The owners of any damaged vehicle or property
Other drivers
Witnesses

Do not accept fault for the accident. Only discuss the facts of the incident with responding authorities, or a representative of your insurance company.

If it is safe to proceed, use your smart phone camera to take photos of the scene and/or any damaged vehicles or property. You may also record witness statements if witnesses are present.

Contact your insurance company to report the possible claim. Notify them of the information you have collected at the scene.
